Finally Google has released the latest version of Android. The new Android 5 is known as Lollipop which will be a major upgrade for many devices. Google had previewed this Android version earlier in June at Google I/O developer event.
Sundar Pichai, SVP, Android, Chrome & Apps wrote in official Google blog that,
“Lollipop is made for a world where moving throughout the day means interacting with a bunch of different screens—from phones and tablets to TVs.”
Android 5 Lollipop Features
Although this android version comes with many features and enhancements, here are some of the biggest improvements Google made to the Android OS.
There is a complete visual overhaul in the new Android version. Android 5 lollipop has a consistent design across devices, basically it has fluid interface. The navigation bar and status bar are revamped, now status bar can be colored or kept transparent.
Notifications and Lock Screen
With new improved notification display, you can choose from which important apps and people you want to get notifications. This is now known as “Priority Mode” which can be turn on by device’s volume button.
The notifications will be shown on lock screen, so that you get every activity update. These notifications can be accessed with just a swipe. The “Quick settings” menu has been revamped too and new controls have been added, flashlight, hotspot, cast screen controls and more.
One more thing, Google has now downgraded the priority that incoming phone calls were given. Now users can choose whether to answer, cancel or just wait for the call to end while continuing with their work.
The new Android 5 will have an opt-in kill switch, which will allow user to clear device’s data on will. Google has called this feature as “Factory Reset Protection.” Once user activates this feature, user will need to enter Google Login credentials to factory reset the device. Google has also introduced encryption by which new devices will come with encryption automatically enabled to help protect data on stolen or lost devices.
A smart lock feature is also introduced which protects the device by paring with a trusted device like watch or car. Android 5 Lollipop includes SELinux enforcing, which enables better protection for all applications against vulnerabilities and malware.
Google has also launched new Messenger app which will be shipping with Nexus 6 as a part on Android 5 Lollipop. The new Messenger app will be different from the Hangouts as it is a SMS/MMS specific app. While Hangouts is a cross platform app that can be used for video calling, messaging, etc.
Finally Google has brought something that was required by many “Guest Mode.” Android 5 Lollipop features guest mode with custom options for access. Device user can configure the level of penetration a guest mode user can have on your device.
Apart from guest mode another feature is also introduced which lets user to log into another Android device and access their own synced messages and content. This feature is pretty useful in case you forget your phone at home.
Android 5 Lollipop consists of a new battery saver feature which claims to extend the battery life by upto 90 minutes. It will also alert the user about the estimated time left for full recharge when charging the phone to help protect device from overcharging. It will also display estimated time left for the device to charge again.
Quick Device Setup
For making it easier for user to shift from old phone to new one, Android 5 Lollipop will allow the user to setup the new device by just tapping on the old device. However this seamless shift and transition requires NFC support.
